BLUNT design umbrellas in Auckland, New Zealand, for people who are tired of replacing them. Every model is built around a frame that keeps the canopy taut and holds its shape in the wind, and every part is designed to be repaired rather than thrown away.
Greig Brebner is an industrial designer from New Zealand. When he arrived in London in 1999, he found the pavements crowded with umbrellas that were awkward to walk past, turned inside out in a gust and ended up in the bin after one storm. The design had barely changed in 150 years. He set out to make a better one.
You can see his thinking at the edge of the canopy. Each rounded tip, the detail that gives BLUNT its shape and its name, works like a small umbrella of its own, opening under force to spread tension evenly from the frame to the fabric. Behind it, a strut mechanism pushes the ribs outwards so the canopy stays tight. Every model is wind tunnel tested, and when something does break, BLUNT would rather repair it than replace it.
Nobody asked for a better umbrella. Greig decided to make one.

Care
Leave a new BLUNT open overnight. It stretches the opening mechanism, so it opens quickly every time. After rain, open it fully and let it dry completely before you put it away, or stand it handle up with the canopy tie released. Keep it in its sleeve when you’re not using it. To clean the canopy, wipe it with warm water and a clean cloth. Avoid detergents and bristle brushes, and don’t machine wash it. Wipe the shaft with a damp cloth now and then, so dirt doesn’t build up and make it stiff to open.
Warranty
BLUNT: Classic, Metro, Neo
Every BLUNT umbrella has a two-year manufacturer’s warranty against faults in how it was made, such as part failures and material defects. Register it with BLUNT and you get two more years on the mechanical parts, so four years in all. Accidental damage, misuse, general wear and tear and canopy replacements aren’t covered. Your Laatu order confirmation is your proof of purchase. If it was a gift, BLUNT asks for the buyer’s details, so get in touch and we’ll help.
